After removing the decayed material or preparing the damaged surface, the dentist will clean the tooth and then full it with either an amalgam or composite fillings. Composite fillings are very popular, since they bond directly with the surface of the tooth and can be shaded to blend in with the tooth’s surface. However, composite fillings are often reserved for teeth that are easily visible in your smile and do not have to bear up under a great deal pressure from chewing. You will still need to brush and floss your teeth, and the dentist will want to check your filling during your regular appointment. Over time, bacteria may work its way between the filling and the tooth, and the filling may need to be replaced. In the case of a composite filling, new layers of composite may need to be added.
