Retainers are an important part of your orthodontic treatment.
If you wear braces, it may seem like you will never see your teeth again! But rest assured that they day will come when your braces can be removed. But, you’re not quite done. Dr. Lien Ngo will have you wear a retainer when you are done with braces. Your braces have done the work of moving your teeth. The retainer makes sure that your teeth and jaw ligaments settle into their new positions. No two mouths are alike, and everyone has to wear their retainer for a different length of time. But its important to wear it for as long as your dentist prescribes.
There are three kinds of retainers:
- Fixed: The retainer is cemented behind the teeth and can only be removed the dentist.
- Hawley: These are very common. These are pieces of plastic that fit in the upper or lower jaw and hold the teeth in place with wire arches.
- Clear: These are often used for patients who have had clear aligners. They are made of a clear material and fit snugly against the teeth.
Retainers are an important part of your treatment plan. At Brookside Dental we will give you instructions on when you should wear your retainer and for how long and how to take care of it. Remember that if you don’t use your retainer properly, your teeth can lapse back into their old alignment.
