Give your teeth a fighting chance against gum disease.
Your gums do more than help hold your teeth in place, although that is an important job. Your gums also protect your body from the bacteria in your mouth. If they become compromised by gum disease, you can suffer loose or lost teeth, a loss of jawbone, and even cardiovascular or respiratory problems.
While gum disease can have several causes, the biggest cause is a buildup of plaque on your teeth. In response to this plaque, your gums swell, which allows plaque to accumulate below the gum line. This is why regular cleanings and exams at Brookside Dental with Dr. Lien Ngo are so important. If gum disease is caught in its early stages, it can be much easier to address.
One way to combat gum disease is through a two-step process called scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning. During the first step, scaling, the dentist will remove the plaque and tartar, also known as calculus from the surface of your teeth, above and below the gum line. During the second step, root planing, the dentist will clean and smooth the roots of your teeth so that they can re-form a healthy attachment to your jaw. The process may take two appointments, and while it is often painless, we can provide you with a local anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable.
Scaling and root planing may be used with other procedures to address your gum disease. To find out more and to schedule your appointment, call 530-622-1987 today.
